Early Times Report
Udhampur, May 14: In connection with drinking water scarcity in Udhampur town, a press conference was held by social activist and retired SSP Mahadeep Singh Jamwal flanked by retired SSP RC Manotra and Honorary Captain Kulbir Singh Katoch. Speaking on the occasion Jamwal reiterated that PHE department Udhampur has projected consumer target of approximately 1.35 lakhs that needs 48 lakh gallons of water per day whereas the department has availability of 37 lakh gallons per day being lifted from three main pumping stations that are: Salmey, Dibber and Sounthia. There is no source no meet the demand and supply gap of 11 lakh gallon per day. Jamwal stated that Udhampur town once known as town of 'Baowlies' such as Mian Bagh baowli Kallar Baowli Billan Baowli Mangu Baowli Rataidi Baowli Cluster of Baowlies at the bank of Devika, Sansu Baowli Khatraidi Baowli (Sangoor), Saken Baowli, Londna Baowli, Gopal Ghat Baowli, Khold Baowli, and many more were the micro sources used to cater the needs of the local population.
All these sources are abandoned for want of due care and sustainability and are at the brink of extinction. But still a large number of these 'Baowlies' are catering to the need of its locality population. Jamwal enjoined upon the PHE department to pay the attention towards these traditional sources of water i.e. 'Baowlies' that still have potential to meet the daily needs of larger population of adjoin areas and it just needs attention of the department, for water distribution at the micro-level networks, by way of tapping micro source of water, the 'Baowlies', that involves less capital, more purposeful and less maintenance costs.
