Authorities unable to launch major offensive?
Poppy cultivation on rise in Pulwama, Budgam
6/6/2019 11:00:01 PM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, June 6: As poppy cultivation is on rise in several areas of Pulwama and Budgam districts, the authorities at the helm of affairs are reluctant to launch a major offensive against the farmers involved in this heinous crime. Except several raids by Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Chadoora last month, all other revenue and police officers are mute spectators to this illegal farming and trade .
Very recently a joint team of Sub Division Chadoora headed by SDM Chadoora Altaf Aziz destroyed poppy cultivation spread over an area of more than 350 kanals of land in the fields of Qazipora, Awanpora, Tangnar, Bagh Hyder, Gowharpora and other adjacent areas of Central Kashmir's Budgam district which borders with Pulwama district , but the areas that fall in neighbouring Pulwama district are yet to be taken to task. Sources say that many other areas especially the farms located on Karewas of Budgam and Beerwah area yet to be identified where poppy cultivation is going on under the nose of Government officials.
The Executive Magistrates of all the three Tehsils of the Chadoora along with police officials, Excise and Revenue Department also participated in a major drive against the poppy cultivation. With very meager resources SDM Chadoora Abdul Aziz reiterated his commitment of zero tolerance towards the individuals found involved in poppy cultivation. Sources say that poppy cultivation is done for narcotic purpose especially the aafim which is sold to outside market in Punjab on a very lucrative price.
Pertinently, engaging in production, manufacturing, possession, sale, purchase, transportation, warehousing, concealment, use or consumption, import interstate, export interstate of such drugs/substances is illegal under section 18 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act 1985.
" From last 5 years the illegal trade and farming of poppy and affim is going on in Pulwama and Budgam districts but authorities have been mute spectators.
It was only very recently that SDM Chadoora acted against this mafia . We appeal authorities to take this matter seriously so that a massive crackdown is launched against the people involved in this trade. In addition to poppy cultivation of cannabisa and ganja is also being done on large scale in many districts of state and authorities should launch a major offensive against the same, " said Mohammad Amin Mir a local resident of Chadoora Budgam
