BJP backtracks from promise of granting UT status to Ladakh
6/7/2019 11:48:39 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, June 7: After winning Ladakh Parliamentary seat with handsome margin, the BJP has once again backtracked from its promise of granting Union Territory (UT) status to Ladakh at this point of time. Instead of fulfilling the promise during President's rule in the State, BJP is now trying to befool people of Ladakh with announcement that after formation of BJP led government in J&K, UT status will be granted to Ladakh within six months.
Talking to reporters at Jammu along with newly elected Member Parliament from Ladakh, Jamyang Namgyal,BJP state president Ravinder Raina excused that there were some technical hurdles in granting UT status to Ladakh. "In the coming Assembly elections in J&K, there will be a chief minister from BJP. And within six months after formation of BJP government in J&K, UT status will be granted to Ladakh", Raina stated, which is a glaring example of cheating people of Ladakh once again.
Even during campaign of the Lok Sabha elections, all BJP leaders had promised to grant UT status to Ladakh. At this point of time when State is under President's rule and BJP has absolute majority in the Parliament there is no logic to defer UT demand till Assembly elections. It is believed that BJP is once again trying to befool people of Ladakh, especially those of Leh.
During Lok Sabha as well as earlier Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) elections here, BJP had promised UT status to Ladakh. On October 1, 2015, top leadership of BJP had repeated this promise.
Party leaders had stated that BJP was committed to pursue fulfillment of long-standing demands of the People of Ladakh region which include grand of UT Status to Ladakh, opening pilgrimage route to Kailash Manasarover via Demjok, declaration of Ladakh as Scheduled-6 areas, inclusion of Bhoti language in 8th Schedule on the Constitution etc.
