2 day TOT programme for teachers held

JAMMU, June 8: Continuing its efforts in curbing the menace of HIV/AIDS and Drug Abuse in the state, J&K State AIDS Control Society (JKSACS) in collaboration with Directorate of School Education Jammu (DSEJ) and Psychiatry Department of Government Medical College Jammu organized a two days Training of Trainers (TOT) Programme for the selected teachers of Model Government Higher Secondary Schools of Jammu, Kathua and Samba Districts including one faculty member from all the District Institutes of Education & Training (DIET) of Jammu province at the conference hall of Government Hospital Gandhi Nagar Jammu which concluded here today. The basic purpose of organizing such trainings is to create a pool of trained resource persons who can further impart this knowledge among the student community and also among the general masses of their respective areas so that the message percolates deep down at the grass root level of the society.
In the concluding session of the programme Ms. Anuradha Gupta (KAS) Director School Education Jammu was present as the chief guest who expressed her views regarding the importance of organizing such training programmes so that the evil could be nipped in the bud only. In her speech she appealed all the agencies working in this field to come on a single platform and contribute in containing this problem of drug abuse in a concerted and a professional manner.
Different topics that were covered during the training programme included introduction to substance abuse, various drugs of abuse, their types and side effects by Dr. Manu Arora, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry, GMC Jammu; Psycho social issues of drug addiction, childhood and psychiatric co-morbodities by Dr. Abhishek Chowhan, Consultant, Department of Psychiatry, GMC Jammu; Drug Peddling and the role of civil society in enforcement by Mr. Sandeep Yadav (I.O), Department of Revenue Intelligence; Basics of HIV/AIDS by Dr, Yaspal Karsyal, Ex. Assitant Director, BSD, JKSACS; Injective Drug Users & Opioid Substitution Therapy (OST) by Dr. Charu Bali, Medical Officer, OST, JKSACS; Mental health issues in adolescence by Dr. Arti Bakshi, H.O.D Psychology, Jammu University and Basic counseling skills by Mr. Romesh Kumar, Incharge counseling cell, DSEJ.
