The Jammu and Kashmir government has sent a proposal to the Medical Council of India (MCI) regarding the permission for the State Government Medical Colleges to increase their intake seat capacity in the undergraduate course by a minimum of 10 percent under the economically weaker section (EWS) quota. If the Medical Council of India gave permission for this, then the Government Medical Colleges in the state of Jammu and Kashmir may get 200 more MBBS seats for the academic year 2019-20.
In 2019, the 10 percent reservation bill, which was passed in the Parliament, provides for quota in jobs and education for the economically weak in the general category. In order to implement the newly introduced 10 percent quota for poor students from the General Category, approximately 25 per cent seats will be added to ensure that the reservation does not disturb the existing quota for SC, ST and other categories, according to Mr. Prakash Javdekar.
Atal Dulloo, who is the Commissioner Secretary at Health and Medical Education Department, Jammu and Kashmir, “An increase of approximately 199 MBBS seats was expected to take place through r scheme. All new existing Medical Colleges have already submitted the proposals to the Medical Council of India. The last date to send the proposal to MCI was June.”
