Comedy of errors

Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, June 22: At a time when thousands of schools in Jammu and Kashmir lack even basic facility like electricity, the government is ironically mulling to give hi-speed internet facility to Gram Panchayats in JK.
One wonders how could the government provide high speed internet to the villages when even basic electricity connections are nowhere existent on the ground.
The government in its response is stating that the PDD infrastructure can be utilized for BharatNet and its integration with the fibre from the block headquarters with minimum 100 Mbps speed to each and every Panchayat.
As per the government spokesman, out of total 4486 Gram Panchayats, 386 have been covered under Phase-I through OFC, while 281 GPs are ready under Phase-I till date through OFC. It was also given out that 1685 GPs are to be covered in Phase-II through VSAT, of which 583 GPs are ready. Number of GPs to be covered under Phase-II through OFC is 2415 in order to connect it with the internet.
However, what could raise a question mark on such government claims is the government's very own data that says that in the Jammu region of the state has 19273 schools wherein toilet facility, Drinking water, government building or compound walling is missing.
Such figures while unmasking the tall claims of the state authorities over ensuring betterment in state's education sector have once again proved how Jammu schools are being neglected and forgotten. Children in these schools are being denied the quality education, hence bellying the claims of advanced system of learning and teaching.
Details reveal that in total, Jammu and Kashmir has 232 such schools wherein toilet facility for children isn't available and out of these 232 schools. 228 are located in Jammu region while as Kashmir has mere 4 such schools.
Further, there are 2817 schools in the entire state wherein there is no drinking facility available for children. Out of these 2817 schools, 2509 are located in Jammu region while as Kashmir valley has just 308 such schools.
Data reveals further that the schools without compound walling in Jammu and Kashmir are 11562 in number. Out of this, 7835 schools are located in Jammu region only which comprises of more than 67 percent in total.
As far as the laboratory facilities are concerned, there are total 470 schools in Jammu and Kashmir which do not have a laboratory for children. Out of these 470 schools, 272 are located in Jammu region.
Jammu region has 762 schools without the library facility available for children. At a time when the government claims of ensuring betterment in sports infrastructure in schools, asking children to actively take part in extra- co curricular activities, there are more than five thousand schools in Jammu region of the state have no play grounds. 105 schools in the region are functioning without Headmasters or Principals. 1257 schools in Jammu have no subject teachers.
And finally, there are 683 schools in JK which have recorded less than 30 percent of the result. Again of out of these 683 schools, 476 which is around 70 percent in total, are in Jammu region of the state.
The government instead of giving internet to Panchayats should have made the infrastructure in these government run schools better for a better tomorrow.
