Whole country demanded inquiry into Shyama Prasad Mukherjee's death, but Pandit Nehru did not order it: BJP India
6/23/2019 12:59:12 PM

New Delhi: Remembering Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee on his death anniversary BJP Working President JP Nadda accused India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru for not ordering an inquiry into Mukherjee's death even when the whole country demanded an inquiry.

History is witness to this and Dr Mukherjee's sacrifice will never go in vain as the party is committed to this cause, said Nadda.

Born in Kolkata on 6 July 1901, Mukherjee was the founder of Bharatiya Jan Sangh, the predecessor to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He also served as Minister of Commerce and Industries from 1951 to 1952 but left the Congress after differences cropped up between him and the PM.

His death under mysterious circumstances remains shrouded in mystery and despite calls for an independent inquiry from all over the country the Centre never ordered one.

If Syama Prasad Mookerjee were a Congress leader and had died in mysterious circumstances at a time when BJP was in power, Congress would have turned the world upside down and pinned the blame of his "murder" on the BJP leadership. This is called killer instinct. pic.twitter.com/Oi8JSWLtFu
Mukherjee’s mother Jogamaya Devi had also requested Nehru to conduct independent inquiry; however, the PM said that after talking to people who were aware of the facts his death was anything but mysterious.

Devi, however, rejected Nehru’s reply and kept on pushing for an inquiry till the time she was alive. She even wrote to the PM but Nehru ignored it.

Former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 2004 had claimed that the arrest of Mukherjee in Jammu and Kashmir was plotted by Nehru and that it was a conspiracy by him.

The then West Bengal Chief Minister Dr BC Roy wrote to Nehru saying there was a rising public feeling in West Bengal over the question of death in detention of Dr Mukherjee. He also called for the PM to understand the situation and order an enquiry by non-official persons like Dr R. Jayakar or Hriday Nath Kunzru or a Supreme Court judge.

In his recent book “Conundrum: Subhas Bose’s life after death” writer Anuj Dhar writes: “Bhagwanji minced no words in holding Nehru responsible for the death of Mukherjee. He alleged that Mookerjee was 'murdered' because of his fallout with Nehru over Bengal and treatment of Hindu minority in East Pakistan, not Kashmir as is generally understood.”

Meanwhile, the West Bengal government observed the death anniversary of Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee today. A letter issued by the Information and Cultural Affairs department of the state government stated, “State Government will observe the death anniversary of Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee on June 23 at 11:30 AM at the Keoratala burning ghat, Kolkata.”

Mukherjee never supported Article 370 and saw it as a threat to India integrity and unity and was very vocal about it both outside as well as inside the Parliament. One of the main reasons behind founding Bharatiya Jana Sangh was to get the article abolished.

Calling for the people of India to support complete integration of Jammu & Kashmir, Mukherjee launched a movement in December 1952 saying “Ek desh me Do Vidhan, Do Pradhan aur Do Nishan nahi challenge” which meant “Ours is one country; we can't have two constitutions, two prime ministers, and two flags”.

However, he died under mysterious circumstances while being in custody on June 23, 1953, in Srinagar.

His death forced the Centre to remove ‘Permit raj’ in Jammu & Kashmir and the post of Wazir-e-Azam (Prime Minister) and Sadr-e-Riyasat (President).
