Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Aug 15: This year's Independence Day function at Srinagar was unique because first time patriotic slogans like Bharat Mata Ki Jai and Vandamatram were shouted during official function in the Valley.
Secondly National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Ajit Doval was himself present in the official function. And most important of all, senior leaders of main stream political parties were absent in the official function because majority of them have been detained to maintain law and order.
Local BJP leaders who were present in today's Independence Day function at Srinagar shouted Bharat Mata Ki Jai and Vandamatram. It is first time in the history of the State that patriotic slogans like Vandamatram was shouted in the official function. NSA, who is monitoring law and order situation in Kashmir Valley after abrogation of Article 370, made it a point to attend today's Independence Day function at Srinagar. He was seen sitting with Governor Satya Pal Malik.
Meanwhile trumpeting Narendra Modi government's decision to abrogate Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir and the eventual bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh in two Union Territories, Governor Satya Pal Malik on Thursday assured that the identity of people of Jammu and Kashmir is neither at stake nor will be tampered with after the abrogation of the state's special status by the Centre.
Terming the changes introduced by the Centre as "historical" Malik said they will open a new door of development and help various communities promote their languages and cultures in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
"These changes have removed the hurdles for economic development and prosperity," he said. Malik said it is surprising that in all the previous elections, focus of people was not brought on issues of 'Roti, Kapda aur Makaan (employment, clothing and housing)'.
Malik said the step will enable good governance, bring self-reliance and employment opportunities to people Jammu and Kashmir and most importantly the feeling of unity and equality with the rest of the country.
