Professionalism in Modern Education
Vivek Koul8/29/2019 10:40:22 PM
Today education has become an essential aspect and a potent tool for the modern industrial society. It is more regarded as an agent of social change than an instrument of social control. It has become increasingly secular. All the nations of the world are investing huge amount of money on education for it has become an essential condition of advancement. Education, modernization, advancement in science, technology and industry normally go together. Formal professional education has become an absolute necessity today. Education is needed just to read, write and do simple calculations but it is more essential to earn one's living. It is the main source of supply of trained and technical persons to industry. The job that one gets today depends largely on the type of education that one has secured. Modern schools, colleges and universities do not give much emphasis upon transmitting a way of life to the students as was given by the earlier forms of education. This is due to the fact that traditional education was meant for an unchanging and static society, a society not marked by rapid changes associated with industrialization. Modern society, on the other hand, is a changing society. In such a society education aims at communicating empirical knowledge, that is knowledge about science, technology and other types of specialized knowledge. Society has made a great effort to modernize the world in terms of education, communication, travel, health, commerce, housing, and in many other ways, so as to increase the standard of living. Modernization of education in India has become a serious problem in several ways. India has adopted the path of economic development within the framework of a free society and therefore it cannot adopt authoritarian means to modernize education. The centre has to get the willing consent of the states and each state has to get the willing consent of its elected representatives in their legislative assemblies before introducing any major change in the allocation of resources to education or in the educational system itself. The most powerful tool in the process of modernization is education based on science and technology. Education has been chiefly instrumental in preparing the way for the development of science and technology. It has brought about phenomenal changes in every aspect of men's life. Education has been accepted as one major agency of socialization, and teachers and educational institutions as socializing agents. It has become one of the influential instruments of social change in India which in turn has led to the mobilization of people's aspirations for development and change.
Thus in modern complex national societies, education can neither be regarded as a controlling force conserving cultural heritage, nor could it be viewed as an agent of social change. It can only be regarded as a cooperative force in bringing about social changes decided by the forces possessing more pervasive power in society. It is worthwhile to mention here that the role of teacher in modernization of education plays a very significant role. Professional ethics in teachers can be seen a major force in upgrading the current education system. Teacher professionalism has relevant significance in education in that it affects the role of the teacher and his or her pedagogy, which in return affects the student's ability to learn effectively. Teacher professionalism has already created the ability to reach students in a meaningful way, develop innovative approaches to mandated content while motivating, engaging, and inspiring young adult minds to prepare for ever-advancing technology. Due to the growing autonomy being given to educators, professionalism remains one of the most influential attributes of education today. Teacher professionalism contains three essential characteristics, competence, performance, and conduct, which reflect the educator's goals, abilities, and standards, and directly impact the effectiveness of teaching through the development of these qualities. A completed definition of teacher professionalism far exceeds the simple notion that a teacher be prepared in a certain manner. A professional is trained to handle all situations, as most episodes in the classroom require quick thinking. Also, teacher professionalism extends beyond one's ability to understand content; the educator must discover if the students are being reached in an effective way. With the role of "teacher" becoming more autonomous, an educator must be competent in their studies, perform well under the eye of the administration and parents, while maintaining good conduct to facilitate quality communication. All this boils down to the fact that the education is an important means of modernization. The importance of education can be realized from the fact that all modernizing societies tend to emphasize on universalization of education and the modernized societies have already attained it.
