Early Times Report

Jammu, Oct 1: Students Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL) organized an organic farmers' meet at village Martselang in Kharu block of Leh district. Many farmers including farm women from different villages of block participated in this meet. Gyal. P. Wangyal Chief Executive Councillor, Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh was the chief guest on this occasion. Dr. Parveen Kumar, Subject Matter Specialist (Agricultural Extension) Krishi Vigyan Kendra-Leh delivered a lecture on different ways by which the farmers can grow crops organically without using the chemical fertilizers. He deliberated and stressed upon the farming community to adopt organic practices like composting and to go for vermi composting with the help of earthworms to produce organic manure. For vermi compost, farmers also do not need much money. Farmers can use all their kitchen waste, crop residues, cow dung, dried leaves, vegetable waste, waste paper etc to produce good quality organic manure with the help of earthworms. The vermi compost is rich in nutrients as it gets enriched with different enzymes, micro-organisims and growth hormones while passing through the gizzard of earthworm. This will ensure that all the waste of the farmers is recycled besides their contribution towards sustainable agriculture.
