Gujjar leaders of NC, PDP not ready to oppose scrapping of Art 370

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 1: Notwithstanding claims of Kashmir centric parties playing religious card to oppose scrapping of Article 370, Gujjars and Bakerwals are coming out in large numbers in support of Union Government's decision to remove this Article.
It is results of Centre's programme to reach-out to Gujjars and Bakerwals that nomadic population has 'realized' that abrogation of this Article would give them political empowerment.
Credible sources said that Kashmir centric parties NC and PDP have directed its Gujjar and Bakerwal leaders to hold protests against abrogation of Article 370 but due to pressure from their own community members these leaders could not muster guts to oppose scrapping of the Article which deprived Scheduled Tribes (STs) of J&K of political reservation for years together.
Gujjars and Bakerwals, who belong to Scheduled Tribes (STs) are going to be benefitted after abrogation of Article 370. After getting ST category in the year 1991, Gujjars and Bakerwals were struggling to get political reservation like other parts of the country. After abrogation of Article 370, Gujjars and Bakerwals are going to get political reservation. Unlike other parts of the country, Gujjars in J&K are Muslims but they have connections with their community members across the country.
J&K is the only States in northwest India having a share of nearly 15 percent population of STs. As per 2011 census total population of STs in J&K counted 14.9 lakh among them 13.2 lakh are Muslim, 1.0 lakh are Buddhist and about 67 thousand Hindu.
Recently BJP had deputed a Gunnar Union Minister to reach-out to Gujjars and Bakerwals-the third largest ethnic group of J&K, to restore peace in this region.
Krishan Pal Gurjar- Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, visited to Jammu region and held interactions with his community members for seeking their help in bringing peace.
