From Jan 2020, police drones to keep vigil in Kashmir
10/12/2019 10:54:29 PM

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Oct 12: Come January 2020, sophisticated drones will supplement police vigil in militancy infested Kashmir. Highly placed sources told Early Times that following expert feedback, the Jammu and Kashmir Police are procuring high-tech drones for round-the-clock surveillance in Kashmir.
The flying machines are scheduled to be "Category III" considered most hi-tech in the category of the unmanned Aerial Vehicles or the UAVs.
Sources said each of the police district would get around two drones and that by the end of the next year all the 96 police stations in Kashmir would get separate drones for vigil.
"Initially we are getting almost half the number of drones as compared to total number of thanas but by the end of next year each of the police station would have its separate drone," a senior official told Early Times.
The first consignment of drones is likely to be delivered to the police department in November, 2019.
The police look ahead to have separate wing of cops that will be specialized in running drones. The police are likely to start drone flying courses at the police academy at Udhampur apart from running similar classes from police training school at Manigam in Ganerbal district of Kashmir.
Sharing details about the features of the drones, the officials said that the drones would be equipped with night vision and infra red devices to keep check on movement of militants.
Officials said the drones would also be capable of assisting police in the counter insurgency operations in the valley.
Sources said the drones would be remote controlled from specialized control rooms.
"Apart from use in counter insurgency, these (drones) will also be used for the surveillance during law and order situations like stone pelting in Kashmir," the sources said.
"Our cops won't necessarily need to capture videos of stone pelters as the drones will themselves do it for us with even more precision," said a senior police official.
When contacted a senior official said the procurement procedure was underway.
