BDC Elections: 1065 candidates in fray after withdrawal of nominations

Srinagar, Oct 12: After the final withdrawal of nomination papers, 1065 candidates are in fray for the elections of Chairpersons for the Block Development Councils (BDCs) in Jammu and Kashmir to be held on 24th of October, 2019.
According to the data made available by the office of the Election Authority J&K Panchayati Raj Act 1989 (Chief Electoral Officer), a total 1092 nominations were found eligible after the scrutiny and withdrawal, out of which 27 candidates were elected unopposed as Chairpersons.
In district Kupwara, there are 101 candidates, in Baramulla 90, in Bandipora, 26, in Ganderbal 28, Srinagar 05, Budgam 58, Pulwama 11,
Shopian 4, Kulgam 18, Anantnag 55, Leh 36, Kargil 38, Doda 74, Kishtwar 44, Ramban 43, Reasi 39, Udhampur 58, Kathua 72, Samba 36, Jammu 82, Rajouri 76 and in Poonch 61 in fray. These include 853 candidates as independent and 239 are from different political parties.
It may be mentioned here that there are 316 blocks in the State, out of these two are without elected Panches or Sarpanches besides, four Blocks have been reserved for women and there are no women candidates thus the elections shall be held in 310 blocks of the State on 24th of October, 2019. All necessary arrangements have been made by the authorities.
For the smooth conduct of elections, there shall be one polling station for one Block Development Council, and accordingly, 310 polling stations have been setup in the State, one in each block where elections are to be held. In total there are 26629 electors, of which 8313 are females and 18316 male for all 316 blocks across the 22 districts of J&K. The ballot boxes would be used during the elections of the BDCs as the election shall be held through secret ballot
