JAMMU, Oct 19: Global terror financing watchdog Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has set February 2020 as the deadline for Pakistan to address the tasks assigned to save it from falling into the blacklist of FATF. According to the media reports, FATF meeting which concluded in Paris on Friday expressed concern over Pakistan only accomplishing 5 tasks out of 27 to control the terror financing and combat the money laundering.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said, "The deadline set up by the FATF is just few months away and it looks impossible that Pakistan would meet the FATF requirements till February next year."
He said that terrorists are operating freely in the neigbouring country and are thriving on the money which they receive through various Hawala channels. "Pakistan is safe haven for the terrorists as they are managed by the Pakistan Army and the ISI," the analyst added.
He said, "FATF retaining Pakistan in the grey list seems to be last warning to it to mend its ways. If Pakistan gets blacklisted it would mean that all important international financial institutions won't keep any relations with it. If it happens it could prove to be a big setback for Pakistan economy which at present is in doldrums."
An observer said, "Many of us were expecting that FATF won't extend the deadline for Pakistan as it is failed to reign in the terror groups and the leaders of these terror outfits. Iran and North Korea are in the FATF blacklist despite both these countries not being linked to terrorism. Pakistan is directly linked with terrorism and the Pak sponsored terrorists are responsible for unleashing terror in different countries including India."
He said, "It seems that global terror financing watchdog FATF is giving a long rope to Pakistan, which houses internationally designated global terrorists like Mumbai attack mastermind Hafiz Sayeed, JeM chief Azhar Masood and many others. Terrorists like Sayeed and Masood have been responsible for radicalization and manufacturing suicide bombers. Such people need to be reigned in but Pakistan government has failed to act against them and they are operating freely without any fear."
A Defence analyst said, "If the FATF is serious about controlling the activities of terrorists then it should act against Pakistan as it is the only country in the subcontinent which poses threat to global peace. Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has been threatening the world with nuclear war which currently is biggest threat to world peace." |
