Union territory status for J&K and Ladakh
10/31/2019 9:41:53 PM
et another provocation to the Kashmir centric political leaders and the separatists after the state of Jammu and Kashmir has been declared as union territory. The state of Jammu and Kashmir will cease to exist from midnight with the August 5 announcement on its bifurcation into two union territories coming into effect from Thursday. This historic change - for the first time a state will be downgraded to two UTs - will alter the region's geography, demography and politics with the two Lt-Governors for Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh taking oath. People and Kashmir centric political leaders are trying to blast August five decision under which Articles 370 and 35-A have been withdrawn thereby generating a new discourse in Kashmir.
The announcement on the creation of two UTs was made in Parliament by Union Home Minister Amit Shah along with the scrapping of Article 370 that granted special status to the state. Later, the J&K Reorganisation Act, 2019, was passed. President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent to the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Bill on August 9. The UT of J&K will have a 107-member Assembly while the UT of Ladakh will have no Assembly. All powers of police, public order and other major decisions will rest with the Lt-Governors of the two UTs. Now that Assembly elections are guaranteed when these elections will take place nobody knows for certain.
Will the violence cease to be a common factor ? Whether Pakistan Army will end ceasefire violations and pushing of groups of militants into the valley? This is a moot question and possibly the people and politicians will take the fight against reorganisation of the state to new heights. And the Kashmir centric political leaders were aghast at the turn of the events. This indicates that the centre is going to ensure full integration of the state with the union of India. Will Pakistan accept the new reorganisation of the state and so far Pakistan exists it is not going to accept any of the decisions of India. This way troops belonging to Pakistan will push groups of militants into Kashmir so as to keep the Kashmir situation boiling.
