Encroachment on footpaths in Kathua goes unabated

Early Times Report
KATHUA, Nov 3: Though the government issues frequent directives from time to time with regard to encroachment of footpaths along roads in city area, yet it is being taken lightly by the District administration Kathua as only half hearted measures are being taken to stop this evil.
"Whenever a visit is paid towards main bazaar Kathua, college road, Shahidi Chowk, Mukherji Chowk, main street of main bazaar Kathua and footbridge outside main bazaar, hindrances rather obstacles crated by shopkeepers and Rehri-Pharri fraternity are quite visible on footpaths and on the streets'' said Simerjit Singh. Due to encroachments on the footpaths, most of the pedestrians walk on roads instead of using the space meant for their smooth walk. "Walking on the road has now become a challenge in itself as hit and run cases have become so common these days. Civic works should also be completed on time," said housewife Preeti, complaining about a stretch of Mukherji Chawok, being dug up and left without repairs. Astonishingly, the administration has turned its ears deaf towards it even though the hardships being braved by the populace is worth noticing. Footpaths near Shahidi Chowk, are not available to the pedestrians most of the times.
They remain occupied by vendors and other traders," said college student Ritu. "The foot over-bridge may prove beneficial for pedestrians but the condition of footpaths and roads is not good enough to even walk due to encroachments by traders or increasing number of vehicles parked right on the roads," she added.
