Kashmir-centric VIP detainees put extra burden on exchequer
11/5/2019 11:01:20 PM

Early Times Report

JAMMU, Nov 5: Management of Centaur Hotel where 34 Kashmir-centric leaders have been detained since August 5 has reportedly submitted a bill of Rs 2.65 crore to the Home Department as boarding and lodging charges of the detainees.
According to the media reports, the Centaur Hotel at the banks of Dal Lake in Srinagar has charged Rs 5000 per head, however, the Jammu & Kashmir administration has rejected the claims of the Centaur Hotel saying that the hotel has been declared as Subsidiary Jail and instead of Rs 5000, government approved rate of Rs 800 would be paid.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said, “It is high time to put these politicians in ordinary jails. They should be shifted from the posh Centaur Hotel owned by Indian Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC), to some other place.”
He said, “These politicians have been given enough time to reconcile with the fact that J&K has been reorganized and they should accept it. If they continue to remain adamant then they should be dealt like the ordinary political prisoners rather than VIP detainees.”
“Their detention should not become a burden on the exchequer and they need to be shown their place,” he added.
Media reports suggest that the administration is planning to shift these detainees to some other place due to temperatures plummeting in the Valley.
It is in place to mention here that a few Kashmir-centric leaders were released by the administration after they signed a bond and assured that they won’t give any provocative statements and won’t indulge in any such activity which could vitiate the atmosphere in the Valley.
An observer said, “These VIP political detainees should understand that times have changed and New Delhi is in no mood to give them any more privileges. If they don’t fall in the line they can end up in real jails. Kashmir-centric leaders during the past 70 years have been given enough liverage and ground by the centre but they failed to deliver. They wanted to keep the cake and eat it too. But it won’t work.” He said, “All the Kashmir-centric leaders during all these years have spoken in one language in New Delhi and in another in Kashmir. Their narrative has been based on deceit. If they fail to mend their ways then they won’t find it easy to adjust in the new system.”
Another analyst said that, “It seems that for time being they will be shifted to some other hotel but this process can not keep on going forever. The government will have to take a call if these leaders don’t show flexibility.”
