Jammu to be hub of political activities this winter
11/20/2019 10:26:25 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 20: Whereas till now, Kashmir would remain the "epicenter" of political activities in the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir state, the newly established Union Territory is likely to tell a new tale by shifting focus to the winter capital.
Sources close to New Delhi said right from "backchannel diplomacies" to straight talks with the stakeholders over the holding of Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, most of the activities on this front would be held in Jammu in the coming two to three months.
Sources said multiple groups of leaders from Bharatiya Janta Party, would be visiting Jammu in particular to gear up their cadres for the future of politics in the union territory.
Apart from the prominent faces of the party, the sources said, some of the union ministers will also be visiting Jammu "more frequently than before in the coming two-three months."
It was reliably learnt that some of the senior leaders of BJP from Kashmir province would also stay camped largely in the winter capital.
And then, there is more to the story. With early winter having gripped Kashmir and the government exploring options of shifting some of the detained mainstream politicians from the valley to the winter capital, the decision can only add to the focus getting shifted to Jammu more.
Analysts said the shifting of some of the detained politicians from Kashmir to Jammu would be game-changer. "Once they(politicians) get shifted to Jammu, any backchannel or direct talks if any and when required with them, will be held conveniently here(in Jammu)," said a senior politician keeping eye on the developments.
Some of the prominent regional politicians from Kashmir, including three former Chief Ministers - Dr Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti are presently under detention at various sub jails in the summer capital.
Other senior politicians from the National Conference , Peoples Democratic Party and the Peoples Conference including Sajad Lone, Ali Muhammad Sagar, Naeem Akhter, Ashraf Mir, Salman Sagar, Tanvir Sadiq and Waheed Parra have been shifted from Centaur Hotel sub-jail to the fortified MLA Hostel on the MA Road that has been converted into new Sub jail.
While Mehbooba has been shifted from a hut on the heels of Zaberwan hills to a government accommodation in the city center, as per official sources, there's every possibility of some of them being shifted to Jammu in the coming days.
Talking to Early Times on the condition of anonymity, a senior official said New Delhi was likely to take a decision on this issue in the coming days.
