| 16 trains to run on Baramulla-Banihal track | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Nov 23: With further improvement in the overall situation and increase in the number of daily passengers, the railway department has decided to run 16 trains on Baramulla in north Kashmir to Banihal in Jammu region from Saturday.
Train service was suspended as a precautionary measure in the valley from August 5, when the Centre scrapped Article 370 and 35 A, besides divided the state into two Union Territories (UTs), evoking spontaneous strike in Kashmir.
However, train service was resumed on Srinagar-Badgam and Baramulla track in north Kashmir from November 12 after successful trial run, a day earlier. Later, train service was also resumed on Badgam-Srinagar-Anantnag-Qazigund in south Kashmir to Banihal in Jammu region.
Official sources said initially only two trains were running during the day from 1200 hrs to 1500 hrs as a precautionary measure. "During the initial days the number of passengers was very low," they said, adding that keeping in view the number of passengers and other factors, it was decided to increase the train runs from today.
They said eight trains will ply from Baramulla to Srinagar and Banihal. Similarly eight trains will ply from Banihal in Jammu region to Baramulla via Srinagar.
The railway department suffered a loss of over Rs three crores due to suspension of train service in the valley for over 100 days.
In the past also train service was suspended in the valley due to law and order problem as during demonstrations and stone pelting railway property, including coaches, track and railway stations suffered damages.
Train service has become very popular in the valley as it is very cheap, safe and fast against other mode of transport available in the valley. |
