Era of manipulation ends, Kashmir- centric leaders in quandary

Early Times Report

JAMMU, Nov 26: The government has set the ball rolling to give one more chance to Kashmir-centric leaders to put their act together. To begin with two leaders were released from MLA Hostel in Srinagar and put under house arrest while three others who were under house detention were set free.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said, "The leaders of the mainstream parties who were detained in Kashmir post August 5 have been caught between the devil and the deep sea. They don't want to sign the bond which government is asking for as their politics revolved around Kashmir being a dispute. On the other hand they don't want to stay confined within the four walls of a prison as they are used to enjoying life."
The analyst said, "Till 5 August the Kashmir-centric politicians enjoyed all the privileges provided to them by the Government of India. They used to get away with everything. They used to tell the common people of Kashmir that J&K's accession with India is temporary while they used to tell the people in New Delhi that J&K is an integral part of India and only issue that has to be resolved with Pakistan is the PoK."
He said, "After August 5, Kashmir-centric leaders were left dumbfounded. They know it very well that if they have to continue as politicians then they will have to toe the nationalist line. Before getting released they have to assure the authorities that they won't indulge in any such politicking which could create law and order problems. Unfortunately, the Kashmir-centric politicians during the past 70 years have got used to manipulation and don't believe in neat and clean politics."
On and after August 5, more than 50 Kashmir-centric leaders were detained in the Valley but during the past four months their number has dwindled to 31.
An observer said, "It looks like that barring a few politicians others will be set free in coming days as the Government of India seems to have decided to give one more opportunity to these leaders to try their luck. But these leaders stand exposed before the people, whom they misled during all these years. The biggest test for Kashmir-centric leaders is to restore their lost credibility as on date all their tall claims stand punctured. They have been left with nothing to sell. If they want to remain relevant they will have to tell truth to people rather than beating around the bush."
