CAA provides ammunition to Opposition
12/16/2019 8:53:11 PM
Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) has provided ammunition to the Opposition to corner the BJP-led government at the centre. The Congress is opposing the new Act tooth and nail and is accusing the ruling Bharatiya Janta Party of dividing the country on religious lines while other parties too have joined the chorus. But the Congress and other opposition parties put together don't have the numbers as the India in 2019 Parliamentary Elections gave a clear mandate to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and endorsed his policies. The Congress seems to have realized that Citizenship Amendment Act is an opportunity to stoke passions and take the BJP led government at the centre head on. Besides holding a 'Bharat Bachao Rally' in New Delhi the friends of Congress party leaders also staged demonstration outside the Indian Embassy in United Kingdom against the CAA. PM Modi took a strong note of the Congress activists staging a protest in a foreign country and accused the party of following the footsteps of Pakistan. The CAA which was passed by the Parliament recently has triggered protests from Assam to Delhi. Assamese people have cut across the religious lines and are opposing the new Act, while the members of a particular community are staging protests in Delhi, West Bengal and Aligarh. The CAA will provide citizenship rights in India to the persecuted minorities in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. But these rights won't be available to the members of the majority community of these countries. Apparently there is nothing wrong with the new Act as it is aimed at giving citizenship rights to such people who have nowhere to go except India. The Act is silent over Muslims in India and it has been made clear by the Union Home Minister Amit Shah again and again that Indian Muslims have nothing to fear. If it is so then why is opposition accusing the BJP-led government of dividing the country? Many people believe that the Congress and other parties have been left issueless and now they are arousing passions to make things difficult for the PM Modi-led government. Protests erupting at different places have provided Opposition with an issue on the platter. The opposition leaders are telling the people that secular fabric of India is being compromised with and it is fast turning into Hindu Rashtra. But many people in the country are asking one question if our neighbouring countries can be Islamic Republics then why can't India become a Hindu Rashtra.
