Early Times Report

Jammu, Dec 16: Shivani Charak of Mountaineering Association of J&K created history for J&K by winning a Bronze medal in Speed climbing in Junior Women category of the Asian Youth Championship which concluded at Bengaluru on 15th December,2019.
After a grim semi final loss to a Japanese climber when Shivani had an unfortunate slip during her climb, she came back all guns blazing to beat another climber of Japan to clinch a bronze medal, thus becoming the first sport climber of J&K to win a medal in an international competition. Earlier in the Lead climbing competition, Shivani had narrowly missed a bronze medal when she could climb 22 holds against Iranian climber Rahil Ramezani's 23. Thus Shivani could secure only the 4th place. Even in Bouldering Shivani had entered the final round but could secure only the 5th position in this continental championship.
It is worth mentioning here that 18 years old Shivani who has bagged over 20 medals in various National Competitions during the last four years, is currently the number 1 ranked sport climber of the country in the Women's category. During the last one year Shivani has a steady rise at the Asian level winning an 11th place, 9th place, then combined 5th place and now a Bronze medal in the Asian Youth Championship. It is also vital to mention that during last year Shivani along with four other climbers of J&K had missed a number of international competitions including World Youth Championship at Arco, Italy for lack of financial support from any sources and could not gain the necessary experience and exposure for the big events.
Meanwhile, Shivani along with Ajay Deep and Arun Deep Singh, ranked 2nd and 3rd in the country in the boys category, has proceeded to Jamshedpur for participation in Tata Steel International Climbing Championship scheduled to be organized from 20th to 22nd December,2019. Meanwhile, Patrons of Tawi Trekkers J&K Ashwani Sharma, former MLA; Rahul Sharma, Chairman, Sprawling Buds ICSE School, Jammu, Prof. Lalit Magotra, President, Dogri Sanstha; Zorawar Singh Jamwal, Secretary General Press Club, Jammu and Chairman Team Jammu; Ram Khajuria, General Secretary, Yogeshwar Kumar and Khurshid Ahmad, both Vice Presidents; Shawetica Khajuria, Joint Secretary, Sushil Singh, Treasurer of Mountaineering Association of J&K; Vivek Chauhan, Principal, Oriental Academy Sr. Sec. School, Jammu; Everester Ram Singh, Everester Nirmal Kumar, Sumit Khajuria, a senior mountaineer and a number of young sport climbers who have been climbing with Shivani for the last many years at Tenzing Norgay Sport Climbing Wall in Sprawling Buds ICSE School campus, have congratulated Shivani for the splendid achievement and have wished her all the best for the next competitions.
