31st J&K Junior Volleyball Championship begins

JAMMU, Dec 16: With a view to promote sports culture and shun the drug menace spreading alarmingly among youths of J&K Union Territory, the Volleyball Association of Jammu and Kashmir (VAJK) in collaboration with J&K Excise Department organized 31st J&K Junior Volleyball Championship for boys and girls in newly constructed indoor complex, MA stadium here. Nearly 300 players/officials drawn from Kupwara, Baramulla, Srinagar, Anantnag, Kulgam, Shopian, Bandipora, Doda, Ramban, Udhampur, Poonch, Rajouri, Jammu, Samba and Kathua are in fray for clinching the championship.
In all, 25 teams including 15 in boys and seven in girls sections are displaying their skills in the championship.
Dr Saleem-ur-Rehman, Director General, Youth Services and Sports, J&K, who was the Chief Guest, declared the championship opened and thanked the organizers and stakeholders including J&K Sports Council/Excise Department for holding the spirits of sportsmen high by way of conducting such type of championships at Jammu. The Chief Guest called upon the players to spread the message of brotherhood and act as ambassadors of drug-de-addiction in their respective areas in true sense.
Dr Naseem Javaid Choudhary, Secretary JK Sports Council, Amarjeet Singh Deputy Commissioner (Executive), Ranjeet Singh Dy Commissioner (Distillery) Excise Department, Dr Daud Iqbal Baba, Director Sports and Physical Education, University of Jammu graced the inaugural ceremony as Guests of Honour.
Dy Commissioner Excise Amarjeet Singh, speaking on the occasion, urged upon the players to contribute their might for making the nation healthy and stronger by paying goodbye to drug menace.
The results of today's matches are as follows:
BOYS: Baramulla beat Poonch by 2-0 (25-23, 25-14); Udhampur beat Doda 2-1 (19-25, 25-16, 15-09); Kathua beat Bandipora 2-0 (25-10, 25-12); Ramban beat Shopian 2-0 (25-10, 25-12); Samba beat Srinagar 2-1 (25-13, 13-25, 15-09); Rajouri beat Anantnag 2-1 (17-25, 25-20, 17-15); and Baramulla beat Kupwara 2-0 (25-19, 25-17).
GIRLS: Samba beat Srinagar 2-1 (19-25, 25-22, 17-15); Poonch beat Kulgam 2-0 (25-7, 25-11); and Udhampur beat Rajouri 2-0 (25-23, 25-17).
Today's matches were officiated by VFI officials Amarjeet Singh, Manik Nargotra, Mulkh Raj Sharma, Neeraj Sharma and J&K referee Shubam Sharma, Ashiq Hussain, Imtiaz Ahmed, Kuldeep Sharma, Azhar Ahmed under the technical guidance of Rajeev Dogra, senior SAI volleyball coach.
