EARLY TIMES REPORT

SRINAGAR, Jan 6: The 270-kilometers long Srinagar-Jammu National Highway (NHW) has come up as a real headache for the people living in the Kashmir valley as the highway gets closed every now and then due to the inclement weather.
The highway has remained closed for many days during the current winter season and the same has created problems for the people of Kashmir valley. Due to the frequent closure of the highway the prices of essentials shoot up like anything thus burning the pocket of a common man.
Early Times talked to few people about the condition of the highway and the problems associated with the closure of the same. These people voiced concern over the frequent closure of highway and opined that the government should wake up to the problems being faced by them on account of highway closure.
“It is a pity that it takes two to three days for a person to cover the distance of 270 kilometers. The people at helm should pay due attention to the frequent closure of Srinagar-Jammu highway and take the corrective measures. Once seriousness is shown by the concerned people then the things will fall in place with people being ultimate beneficiaries,” said Hilal Ahmad, a resident of Sanat Nagar.
The people as a whole believe that in the past Kashmir has been witnessing heavy to very heavy snowfall but the highway would never closed for days together. They said that the role of the concerned officials should be probed so that real picture comes to the fore and responsibility is fixed.
“It is necessary that the whole episode of frequent closure of Srinagar-Jammu National Highway is probed and the same is taken to logical conclusion. Once this done the culprits would be identified and then action is taken against the erring officials. Sooner it is done better it would be,” said Mohammad Aslam, a resident of Karan Nagar.
The people in general have appealed Lieutenant Governor Girish Chander Murmu to intervene in the matter and ensure that un-necessary trouble is avoided to the people. They said it is necessary to probe the matter in professional manner so that stern punishment is given to the guilty.
