Political impasse ends
1/8/2020 10:22:29 PM
Eight former legislators from Kashmir calling on the Lieutenant Governor Girish Chander Murmu has ended the five month long political impasse.
These leaders presented a memorandum to the LG with a charter of demands. They laid emphasis on restoration of J&K's Statehood besides driving home a point that people are unable to reconcile with the fact that J&K's special status has been revoked.
The delegation barring Ghulam Hassan Mir comprised of the leaders from Peoples Democratic Party, which has been deserted by the most of its leaders. These leaders by meeting the LG have sent a signal that they are ready to be the part of a fresh political set up in the newly craved out Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, where assembly elections are likely to be held after the delimitation process (which is yet to be announced) is completed.
Traditional Kashmir centric parties like National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may not find any space in the new setup. Former PDP leader and Rajya Sabha Member Nazir Ahmed Laway, who was expelled from the party for attending the swearing in ceremony of LG Murmu in Srinagar in October last year, has gone on record to say that the old regional parties have no future now as the political scenario in J&K has changed.
People, who used to predict that former chief ministers, including Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah have no future, stand vindicated. Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah, who have been under detention for the past five months, don't fit into new scheme of things as their narratives of self rule and autonomy have become irrelevant with the transition of erstwhile J&K State into a Union Territory.
The road ahead seems to be clear for the politicians, who want to be a part of the New India. The time has changed and so have the political leaders. Politicians under detention at MLA Hostel in Srinagar, according to the media reports, too have become restless and want to become a part of the new political process but the UT administration is yet to take a call on their release.
Kashmir centric leaders trying to make an attempt to regroup and bounce back on the political arena of Kashmir is a signal for Jammu based leaders to put their act together so that they are able to represent the aspirations of the people of this region in the new political set up which is likely to emerge.
