Unsafe buildings posing threat to lives in Jammu, authorities unmoved

Jammu, Jan 23: The unsafe buildings in various areas falling under the jurisdiction of Jammu Municipal Corporation are continuously posing the threat to the lives and properties of the common people as the authorities responsible for demolition of these unsafe buildings are sleeping over the matter.
As per the details available with “Early Times” there are hundreds of buildings who are unsafe for living beside their are also several other buildings wherein no body reside but are posing the threat to the lives and properties as same are at the verge of collapse.
In latest example, part of an unsafe building on Panjbakhtar road in Jammu collapse last week at the time Jammu witnessed heavy rainfall along with high speed winds.
The locals told the Early Times that there are hundreds of buildings pre dated to independence who had become unsafe and are supposed to be demolished by the administration as well as by the Jammu Municipal Corporation to avoid any disaster.
The locals further said that many such buildings are in areas falling under old Jammu city and was located in densely populated areas.
They said that their is immediate need to constitute high level committee to identify these unsafe buildings so that necessary actions and comprehensive plan could be formulated to deal with this burning issue added that most of these buildings are custodian properties.
Speaking to Early Times, a senior official on the condition of the anonymity inform that unsafe buildings are major concern not only in JMC, but in Srinagar Municipal Corporation as well beside also in majority of the Municipal Councils and Municipal Committees across the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. He said that both administration and concern Municipal Corporations, Councils and committees have the powers within their jurisdiction to order for demolition or maintenance through repairment works of these unsafe buildings— whatever the situation warranted as per the physical condition of the building. He said that surprisingly many such structures are being found in commercial hubs openly posing threat to lives and properties and ask the authorities to initiate process for demolition of these unsafe buildings before it was too late for them.
