Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan 31: Widow of a SPO from Poonch district, whose husband died 15 years ago, has been running from pillar to post along with her teenage son, who is mentally unstable in hope of getting assistance from the Police department but her struggle doesn’t seem to be ended due to apathetic attitude of the department.
The destitute widow, SudeshKumari, who is resident of village Golard of tehsil Mendhar of Poonch district, whose husband Amrit Lal Sharma died nearly 15 years ago while discharging his duty but the department didn’t come forward to help his family, who has been facing huge hardships in sustenance of their life as the deceased SPO was the only bread earner for his family.
Not only the Police Department, even the local administration didn’t take the issue on humanitarian basis so that widow could run his family, which has been facing starvation. “She has been making several rounds of the Police Department to get some relief but her requests were never given due considerations,” sources alleged.
She lives in a Kacha house along with her son. The house is in deplorable condition and seeps during rains making their life difficult to live in. She has been running her family by cleaning utensils in neighbourhood and due to paucity of money she could not get treated her mentally unstable son. “Although concerned administration assured me to provide benefit of several government schemes for poor but till date, no benefit has been given to me,” she alleged.
Balram Sharma, who neighbour of deceased SPO, while talking to Early Times informed that it is very unfortunate that SPO, who served police department for years and was part of many anti terror operations but after his death, his family was not given any financial support by the department.
When contacted SDM MedharSahilJandyal said that he had no knowledge of the issue but he would take up the issue with Police Department. He also said that he will direct the Rural Development Department to provide assistance for construction of her house.
