Early Times Report

BARAMULLA, Mar 2: Inhabitants of scores of villages of Kandi belt in this North Kashmir district are up in arms against the Roads and Building (R&B) department authorities for failing to undertake repairs of roads due to which the general public and in particular school going children suffer at large. Locals of various villages of Kandi area have expressed resentment over dilapidated condition of roads due to which school going children suffer like anything. They said that R&B department has failed to macadamize the roads in various villages of Kandi belt from past several years.
“Our school going children and patients are the worst hit due to government negligence as the roads in our Kandi belt have not been macadamized from past several years and from time to time our requests we were ignored by the authorities concerned, said Mushtaq Ahmad from Kalantra.
He said, “The department seems to be in deep slumber, poor utilization of funds from many years and the money provided by Government of India (GOI) under various schemes has got lapsed due to poor utilization.”
Despite tall claims, the department of R&B is not able to use funds properly due to many reasons and one of the main reasons is they are not willing to utilize the funds at ground level, a local alleged.
He said that students prefer to visit by foot as the condition of roads are not good, besides that, the old aged people face lot of difficulties. He said that expectant mothers face hardships when they travel by bus.
These roads have turned into death trap as there are big potholes that are visible from Kreeri tehsil via Watergam and Mungam towards Kalantra Payeen and Kalantra Bala.
Another local resident, Mohammad Ramzan said that, despite the fact that many times in the recent past they gave representation to the concerned department, but the department has been turning a deaf ear towards our problems.
A group of local residents of Kalantra Bala said that last time government macadamized other link roads in the locality and that their roads were deliberately left unattended.
The locals said that dilapidated condition of the road causes immense inconvenience to the inhabitants of these areas.
