United Nations has no locus standi
3/9/2020 12:21:09 AM

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has once again made it clear that Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is an internal matter of India and no one will be allowed to interfere in it.
He slammed the human rights wing of the United Nations for approaching the Supreme Court of India against the CAA and made it clear that UN has no locus standi.
The Parliament amending citizenship act has triggered a wave of protests across the country. A notion has been created that it’s aimed at snatching the citizenship of the Indian Muslims but the fact is that it has got nothing to do with the Indian citizens. It clearly states that the CAA will provide citizenship rights to members of persecuted minorities in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.
The misinformation campaign launched by elements inimical to peace and opposition parties has turned this issue into an international issue. After the UN human rights body intervened, Congress casually blamed the government for the mess without realizing that how much disservice it has done to the nation by politicizing the issue for remaining relevant.
Communal riots that first broke out in Uttar Pradesh and in northeast Delhi have dented India’s image across the globe. Provocative statements issued by the Congress leaders and the fanatic leaders of AIMM led by Assadudin Owaisi led to polarization. Even a few BJP leaders added fuel to the fire by reacting sharply to the statements issued by the other side.
Lot of damage has been caused due to misconceptions being spread about the CAA. This law has provided state to the stateless people. It has come as a big relief for the members of minority communities, who had fled their countries after facing persecution for practicing their faith.
The question is being raised why Muslims have been kept out of the purview of the new act. People who are raising this question need to understand that Muslims cannot be persecuted in a Muslim country for practicing their faith but others can be.
The dwindling population of minorities in countries like Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh are an ample proof of minorities fleeing their countries in search of peaceful life.
United Nations Human Rights Commission should ask the countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan why do they treat minorities as second grade citizens? Why human rights of the people of other communities are not respected? Rather than indulging in the affairs of a country which is providing citizenship to the stateless people.
