Fresh traffic allowed on Kashmir highway after clearing stranded vehicles
3/10/2020 6:55:20 PM

Srinagar, Mar 10: Fresh traffic was allowed on Tuesday from Srinagar to Jammu after all vehicles, stranded there since Saturday, were cleared on the 270-km-long national highway.
Meanwhile, massive snow clearance operation by Beacon project was going on to clear the highway which connects the Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh with Kashmir. The 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh highway had remained closed for the past three months due to heavy snow and poor road conditions.
The 86-km-long historic Mughal road and Anantnag-Kishtwar road which has also remained closed for the past two months due to heavy snowfall.
"One-way traffic was allowed from Srinagar to Jammu on Monday on the Kashmir highway till further orders to avoid traffic jam and accidents," a traffic police official told UNI.
He said Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) would be allowed to crossed Zig, Qazigund from 0600 hrs to 1100 hrs on Tuesday.
The Srinagar-Jammu national highway, linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was closed due to landslides and shooting stones, triggered by rain between Ramban and Ramsu on Saturday.
However, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) put into service sophisticated machines and men to clear the road and allow stranded vehicles to move towards their respective destinations.
The official said traffic was again suspended for few hours due to shooting stones. "All the stranded vehicles were cleared by late Monday evening," he added.
He said only one-way traffic will continue to ply on the highway till further orders as the road is very narrow and has been damaged at several places between Ramban and Ramsu where only one vehicle can pass easily.
Regarding the historic Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region, which has remained closed for the past over two months will take about two more months before it can be opened up for regular traffic. The road which is seen as alternative to the Srinagar-Jammu highway. The Anantnag-Kishtwar road has also remained closed due to snow.
