SKIMS to be Govt's next stop to omit Sher-e-Kashmir title
The endangered ‘Lion’:

Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 11: After rechristening the name of Sher-e-Kashmir international convention centre (SKICC) this week, the government seems to be adamant not to stop on this only. It is likely to rechristen the name of SKIMS this month.
Early Times in a detailed story published on Jan 31 had reported that the government may change the name of SKICC and is going to omit out Sher-e-Kashmir from it.
The government on January 25 issued an official notification in which it was announced that the Sher-e- Kashmir police medals awarded to police personnel for exemplary services shall be from now on called as Jammu and Kashmir Police Medals. Such an action was taken almost a month after the government removed December 5- birthday of NC founder- as the gazetted holiday in the erstwhile state.
Now with removal of Sher-e Kashmir title from the police medals, the government seems to have been making its intentions clear that it may go ahead with its proposal to rename the government institutions which are prefixed with Sher-e Kashmir title. The intuitions which may be rechristened are Shere Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Shere Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences (SKUAST), Sher Kashmir stadium, and number of universities, bridges, conference halls, police training institutes and several other public buildings and schemes that bear the title "Sher-e-Kashmir". There is a also a vital employment generation program of the government namely Sher-e-Kashmir Employment and Welfare Programme or SKEPWY which may also be rechristened.
“The process may be initiated anytime soon and the proposal in this regard will come under serious consideration of the government,” says a senior government official and refused to divulge any further details.
Meanwhile, official sources told Early Times that the Government has no official record wherein the founder of the political party- national conference- Late Sheikh Mohd Abdullah has been officially given title of "Sher-e-Kashmir". “There is no record available in any government file which can confirm that the government has ever conferred the title of Sher Kashmir to Sheikh Sahib. If there are government institutions or schemes that bear the name Shere Kashmir, it means same has been done by the political parties who were in power and want the name Sher Kashmir used. At official level no such title ever existed and if there is nothing like Shere Kashmir existent, how could it be removed?,” says an official privy to the development.
The RTI application filed back in the year 2015 had asked the government whether the title Sher Kashmir given to Sheiklh Abdullah has been endorsed by the government. The PIO of GAD vide letter no. GAD/RTI (Adm.)/1553/2015 informed the RTI applicant that the Government has no such information available with it regarding the conferment of title of 'Sher-e-Kashmir' on Sheikh Mohd Abdullah.
As there have been numerous statements issued from the Kashmir based politicians about how the name changing is akin to invading on Kashmir’s history. However, as the government cancelled the holiday which was being observed every year on NC founder birthday, it made its intentions clear about going ahead with axing the Sher-e-Kashmir title.
As per the insiders, SKIMS is going to be the government’s next stop in the process of bidding adieu to the Sher-e-Kashmir.
