EARLY TIMES REPORT

ANANTNAG, Mar 14: A large number of serious irregularities have surfaced in R&B Division Shopian where the engineers have allegedly violated norms while allotting works and withdrawn huge payments frequently. Well-placed sources revealed to Early Times that the engineers, who were posted as Executive Engineers of R&B Division Shopian for the last over 10 years, have withdrawn huge payments from the state exchequer without actually executing the works.
The engineers, according to the sources, have also violated norms without fallowing the procedure. “The engineers posted at R&B Division Shopian used to allot works without floating tenders and this system continued till last year,” they claimed.
An insider revealed that during last two years, the former Executive Engineer of R&B Division Shopian has fraudulently withdrawn around Rs 22 lakh from the state exchequer on account of executing some works but on ground those works against which the payment has been withdrawn doesn’t exist.
They also said that the practice of allotting contracts to blue-eyed contractors through approvals and extensions continued till last year. “Post 2014 floods, huge amount of funds has also embezzled,” he claimed.
Sources said that very recently the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has started investigating the irregularities and frauds that surfaced at R&B Division Shopian.
“The probe initiated by the ACB is going at a fast pace and likely the anti-corruption probe agency will book at least three Engineers who remained posted at R&B Division Shopian and are directly involved in embezzling the funds and causing damage to state exchequer,” they added.
It is important to mention here, post abrogation of Article 370 and Article 35A, the ACB has gone active and has tightened noose around the corrupt. The actions of the ACB is being widely hailed, however people expect more from the agency by registering cases against all those influential bureaucrats who have swindled peoples’ money in nexus with the politicians.
