Out of this total amount, over 64 percent that is Rs 5935.04 Crores is outstanding against state as well as central government departments. Despite the fact that the outstanding power dues of domestic consumers is 1/3rd of the outstanding power dues of the government departments but the domestic consumers have to face brunt of power outages, whenever there demand of power supply increases during peak seasons but the government departments, which are the major power defaulters have been getting round the power supply.
Moreover, the industrial and commercial establishments of Jammu and Kashmir have a total of Rs 1462.33 Crores of outstanding power dues, out of which Rs 880.52 Crores is pending to Jammu Power Development Corporation Limited while Rs 581.81 Crores are outstanding with Kashmir Power Development Corporation Limited.

“Time and again the government officials as well as politicians could be found criticizing the domestic consumers for alleged power pilferage but the data speaks something else as these government officials as well as politicians are the major defaulters as in the government departments, they used the power tariff but delay payment of power tariff”, an official said, adding that earlier also it had come to fore that many politicians across Jammu and Kashmir province had outstanding power dues to the tune of several lakhs of rupees.
