J&K needs to do much more to control Corona virus: JKNPP

Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 15: Chairman Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) Harsh Dev Singh while pointing towards the reports of a Corona infected patient of Jammu who was earlier declared –ve by GMC Jammu and later found to be positive by Pune based National Institute of Virology (NIV), said that the episode has raised several questions over the authenticity of the testing lab installed in the Medical College Hospital.
This indicates the extreme fragility of the health care system in J&K which has been making lofty claims of unparalleled service in the past with several national awards at its credit. He said that with thousands of suspected cases having been kept under surveillance, the lack of authentic testing facilities would render the entire preventive measures redundant in the region. He said that the most alarming aspect of the matter was the number of suspected cases increasing day after day despite several precautionary measures.
With deadly Covid-19 spreading across the globe with a dangerous speed, the govt. needed to do much more than shutting schools, colleges and public places said Singh. “Establishment of points for entry surveillance, universal screening of all incoming passengers, sufficient labs and quarantine facilities needed due attention of the government. The fear is that the outbreak will take hold and overwhelm a poorly provisioned public health system in the region. The emphasis should be on social distancing and avoiding all unnecessary congregations of people.
The public health authorities needed to increase screening and testing with a thrust on vulnerable persons and keep educating people to follow basic sanitary hygienic measures. Tracing the patients’ contacts and monitoring of home quarantined individuals are essential for preventing large scale spread of virus which otherwise has the potential to explode in a big way” observed Singh.
He said that Corona Virus and other dreaded epidemics in the past like swine flu are reminder to the govt. to invest in health security of the people by strengthening its primary as well as tertiary sectors and strengthen the health care system.
