Demand to drop ‘Sher-i-Kashmir’ title from SKUAST-J gains momentum

Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 15: Ever since the Jammu and Kashmir administration has rechristened the “Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) as Kashmir International Conference Centre, the long pending demand of faculty members of Sher-e-Kashmir Agricultural University of Jammu (SKUAST-J) for changing nomenclature to Jammu Agriculture University has gained momentum.
The Sher-e-Kashmir title, which was attributed to the former Chief Minister of J&K and National Conference founder, Sheikh Abdullah, was dropped from SKICC just last week. Some senior members of the Teaching Faculty Association of SKUAST Jammu said that it has been their long pending demand that nomenclature of university be changed by considering the general sentiments of the people of Jammu region.
They further said that ‘Sher-i-Kashmir’ title to the Agriculture University in Jammu, was imposed by the previous National Conference government only to propagate the name of its party founder. The then NC regime ignored various famous personalities of Jammu, who sacrificed their lives for the upliftment of this region.
Members of association have already submitted a memorandum to the J&K Lieutenant Governor to rechristen SKUAST Jammu to Jammu Agriculture University.
“Sher-i-Kashmir title doest exist in the official record and the use of this title in various government institutions is totally invalid, which was revealed under through a RTI,” sources said.
They said, “Premier universities in the country have been named after a State or a region like Punjab University, Delhi University etc. but in case of SKUAST Jammu, a particular political party deliberately imposed name of its leader without caring for the sentiments of Jammu people.”
Sources said that the members of teaching association also met the local BJP legislators and Members of Parliament and put forth their demand to change the name of this important varsity. “The issue was also taken up with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The Union Home Minister assured that the sentiments Jammu people will be respected. During public outreach programme, the faculty members also met the Union Minister of State, Ministry of Agriculture Kailash Choudhary and submitted memorandum to him in this connection,” they added.
“When BJP shared power with the PDP many people had expected that the demand will be considered but the issue was not given space by the PDP to keep its vote bank intact in the Valley,” sources added.
