| Fresh traffic allowed on Kashmir highway after clearing stranded vehicles | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Mar 15: Fresh traffic was on Sunday allowed from Jammu to Srinagar after all the vehicles, stranded since Thursday, were cleared last night on 270-km-long national highway, connecting Kashmir with rest of the country.
Massive snow clearance operation by Beacon project was going on to clear the 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh highway, which is likely to be open for traffic at the end of this month. The highway, which connects the Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh with Kashmir, remained closed for the past three months due to accumulation of several feet of snow.
The 86-km-long historic Mughal road and Anantnag-Kishtwar road also remained closed for the past over three months due to accumulative of several feet of snow.
‘’Fresh traffic was on Sunday morning allowed on from Jammu to Srinagar on highway after clearing stranded vehicles last night,’’ a traffic police official said.
He said the traffic was again stranded for some time in the morning due to fresh landslides in Ramban area.
However, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), responsible for the widening and maintenance of the highway, pressed into service sophisticated machines and cleared the landslide. ‘’After getting green signal from traffic police official deployed on the highway, the vehicles were allowed to move towards Srinagar,’’ he added.
The historic 86-km-long Mughal road, which connects Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch also remained closed due to accumulation of eight to ten feet of snow. Though the authorities have started snow clearance operation, there was fresh snowfall during the past few days on the road, which is seen as alternative to Srinagar-Jammu highway. The Centre has already agreed to construct a tunnel to make it all weather road. |
