Pay attention towards underdeveloped localities: Munish
Ajit Nagar in Rani Bagh area still awaits leveled lanes, channelized drainage

EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Mar 18: Editor in Chief, Early Times, Munish Gupta, on Thursday urged the authorities to pay attention towards those localities which are still underdeveloped despite being brought under the jurisdiction of Municipal limits.
He said that localities like Ajit Nagar in Ranibagh near Jammu Airport are still yearning for overall development as non-provision of basic amenities like leveled lanes and drainage system are yet to be provided to the residents of the area.
“There is urgent need to take note of the plight of inhabitants of Ajit Nagar. Sorry to say that the locality is still far from being called an urban area. It is the moral responsibility of the administration to address the issues being faced by the residents of the locality, however, regrettably authorities hardly listens to their grievances,” said Munish, who would be contesting the forthcoming Assembly elections as an independent candidate from Gandhi Nagar constituency.
He said that people of the area are nowhere to go to get rid of their miseries adding that they are still waiting to have blacktopped lanes, provision of channelized drainage system and proper sanitation even after residing in the area for more than 25 years.
“It’s indeed a failure of the authorities to provide basic amenities to the residents of Ajit Nagar even as Jammu has been chosen for being developed as a Smart City,” said Munish.
Meanwhile, a large number of Ajit Nagar residents said that unmetalled lanes and by-lanes, poor hygienic condition of the area and lack of proper drainage system have become a “fait accompli” for them adding that despite making several requests to the elected representatives as well as the authorities nobody give it a damn to show any concern towards their problems.
“The lanes in our locality are in a pathetic condition for the last more than 25 years as they were never metalled or tiled. We made several pleas in this regard but the concerned authorities hardly pay attention to such a basic necessity essential for any locality. There is no proper drainage system in our locality. Non-provision of drains cause severe problem of water logging due to which the dirt filled water often enters into our houses.”
SURINDER SINGH
“The blacktopping or even tiling of our lanes was never carried out for the last 25-30 years. We are now used to live along dusty lanes as the authorities have refused to relent. The poor sanitary condition of our locality is another aspect which needs to be addressed while the drainage system also needed to be upgraded as the locality has a drain only at one side of the main street. The only drain in the locality is almost blocked due to which the garbage spills on street.”
JASPREET SINGH
“The main lane of our locality is in shambles. The authorities have turned a blind eye towards its dilapidated condition. There is severe problem of water logging due to non-provision of drains due to which it becomes impossible for the residents especially old age people like me to reach the main road as several spots in the area get inundated particular during heavy rainfall. The locality is ill-equipped as far as street lights are concerned. The newly fitted LED lights have become defunct within days of their installation. We approached the concerned authorities to replace or repair the non-functional street lights but nothing has been done so far.”
TIRATH KOUR
“Nobody cares for Ajit Nagar and its inhabitants. We only get false promises and assurances from elected representatives and administration. The authorities never bother to ensure provision of civic amenities for the residents. The locals are deprived of basic facilities like smooth lanes and proper drains till this day though they are putting up here for almost thirty years now. We are being treated as 2nd class citizens.”
