Business houses, including banks---running without paying the SMC registration fee required to operate any commercial establishment---in Srinagar has once again brought to fore how things were mismanaged in the Valley by the erstwhile Kashmir centric regimes.
The careless attitude of the former regimes has led to Srinagar Municipal Committee (SMC) suffering huge loses. Another factor which cannot be ignored is that on one hand business houses were allowed to operate without paying the mandatory tax, while on the other people in Jammu were made to pay the taxes through their nose. No such exemption was granted to the people in Jammu region. People of Jammu during the past so many years have been raising the issue of discrimination being faced by them at the hands of Kashmir centric leaders.
Reorganization of the erstwhile J&K State has opened the Pandora’s Box and it has brought to fore the misgovernance which J&K faced during the past 70-years.
The administration of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir will have to overhaul the system to make the things work. The scandals and scams which happened during the tenure of the past regimes need to be investigated to send a message that no one will be spared irrespective of the position he or she has held in the past.
The Kashmir centric politicians, who used to project themselves as the only viable options to rule erstwhile J&K State, have been shown their worth post August 5, 2019. The Government of India (GoI) has driven home a point that it’s not only the Kashmir centric leaders who can rule J&K. These leaders since 1947 didn’t allow any Dogra from Jammu region to become the Chief Minister as the number of assembly seats in Kashmir always remained more than Jammu. Now, the Delimitation Commission has been constituted and the number of Assembly seats is all set to increase in Jammu region. This will empower the people of Jammu and there is every possibility about the next Chief Minister of J&K being from Jammu. There is long list of injustices which Jammu has faced at the hands of Kashmir centric leaders. The changed situation has provided Jammu leaders a chance to come forward and lead from the front. Now the field is open for them, they just have to put their act together and tell the country that Jammu and Kashmir is not only about Kashmir and Jammu is the equal partner.
