COVID 19: NGOs become active, seek donations amid crisis
Encashing Fear?

Early Times Report
jammu, Mar 26: The outbreak of COVID-19 has led to NGOs becoming active in Jammu and Kashmir, especially in the Valley. These NGOs have started seeking donations from the people on the name of helping poor.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said, "Whenever, any pandemic breaks out such NGOs do become active and start collecting funds. They publicize their account numbers and ask philanthropists to contribute."
He said, "No one ever knows how much money they collect and how much they spend for the people. It always remains a mystery. This happened in the past on many occasions, and there is every possibility about it happening now also."
The analyst said that as the COVID-19 scare will grow we will see few people going house to house to collect funds and it usually happens more in Kashmir than in Jammu.
An observer said, "At present a few Kashmir based NGOs are claiming that they are collecting money for providing protective gears to the doctors, who according to them are fighting this deadly virus without any protection."
He said that Jammu and Kashmir administration needs to take a serious note of this issue and ensure that the medicos are not exposed to risk. "Another point is that it's the duty of the government to provide protective gear to the medical practitioners and not the NGOs. Strict instructions should be issued to such NGOs, who are collecting money to save the doctors," he added.
Another analyst said, "The authorities should ensure that no one takes the advantage of the prevailing crisis. These NGOs need to be nailed now. If anyone wants to help the people in this hour he should join the initiatives which are being taken by the administration rather than utilizing the opportunity to make the hay in the times of crisis."
He said, "These NGOs are claiming that they are helping the administration by providing masks and sanitizers directly to the people in need. They can do the same by handing these items over to the administration and ask their volunteers to accompany the officials, who will be assigned the job to distribute them."
The analyst said, "There are many poor people who are struggling to feed their families. They need to be identified and provided all sort of relief. These NGOs cannot do it in isolation. They have to seek government's help and the money which they are collecting needs to be accounted upon."
