SRINAGAR, Mar 26: Panic gripped the people of Kashmir valley after the first Corona Virus death took place in the early hours today. The person who died due to COVID-19 had tested positive on Tuesday and was admitted at Chest Diseases Hospital, Drugjan-Dalgate.
In the meantime, two siblings aged eight months and seven years old respectively became the latest victims of COVID-19 after they tested positive today. The grandfather of the siblings had gone to Saudi Arabia and tested positive for Corona Virus on Tuesday. The family is putting up in the Natipora area of the Srinagar district.
The deceased person was originally a resident of Sopore in North Kashmir's Baramulla district and at present he was living in the Shah Anwar Colony of Hyderpora area. Shah Anwar Colony is considered to be one of the posh areas of the Srinagar district. His body was taken to Sopore where he was laid to rest.
The person who died due to COVID-19 visited places like Delhi, Nizam-ud-din Dargah in Delhi, Deoband in Uttar Pradesh, Samba in Jammu division and Sopore in Baramulla district before being admitted to Chest Diseases Hospital, Drugjan-Dalgate after being suspected to be a Corona Virus patient.
Since the deceased was part of a religious group that visited different Masjids and Dargahs in the country over the past three weeks or so, one cannot rule out the possibility of many people getting in contact with them and then getting affected by the Corona Virus. As such there is a possibility that many more Corona Virus patients may come up in the various areas of the country.
With two fresh cases of Corona Virus coming to the fore today the number of people affected by COVID-19 in the union territory of Jammu & Kashmir is 13. While one of the affected persons passed away today and yet another has recovered, the active cases of COVID-19 are 11.
Referring to the death of COVID-19 patient the government spokesman Rohit Kansal tweeted, "Sad News: First death due to Coronavirus-65 years old Male from Hyderpora Srinagar. Four of his contacts also tested positive yesterday."
In yet another tweet, Kansal wrote, "Two more positive cases in Srinagar. Siblings (7 years old and 8 months old)-grandchildren of a confirmed case from Srinagar with travel history to Saudi Arabia who had tested positive on 24th. Total number of active positive cases now 11."
The government through its media bulletin today said that 5482 travelers and persons in contact with suspected cases have been enlisted for surveillance and, so far, 13 cases have tested positive in Jammu and Kashmir (11 active positive, 01 recovered, 01 death). It said that 3053 persons have been kept under home quarantine, including at facilities operated by the government, while as 117 are in hospital quarantine.
Persons who are under home surveillance stand at 1761 while as 551 persons have completed their 28-day surveillance period. The bulletin said that 379 samples have been sent for testing, of which 341 tested as negative and 13 cases have tested positive of which one recovered and one died. It said that reports of 25 cases are awaited.
Meanwhile, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Pandurang K Pole has ordered inquiry into the alleged mishandling of the COVID19 patient who died today in the morning at CD hospital Srinagar. Additional Commissioner Kashmir Tasaduq Hussain Mir has been asked to enquire into the matter. The officer has been asked to complete the probe in two days.
