Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, July 16: At a time when the Corona Virus crisis has engulfed the whole world including the union territory of Jammu & Kashmir the people of Kashmir are up against yet another challenge and the same is related to a basic amenity of life.
Sources in the Jal Shakti department told Early Times that dirty, filthy and unfiltered water is being supplied to the people of Kashmir since the necessary chemicals have run out of stock. The sources said that stock has exhausted long back and it would take some time for the stock to be piled up again.
“For the past 15 days or so the Jal Shakti department has been supplying dirty water to the people of valley. The main reason is that necessary chemicals like ferric alum and chlorine have run out of stock. It would take another couple of weeks at least for the department to get the stocks piled up again,” said sources.
Sources said that since ferric alum and chlorine are not available, the department is supplying water without the necessary treatment and chlorination. They said the health of people of Kashmir is at risk since the water being supplied to them is dirty as well as filthy and chlorine tablets are not added to the same at different filtration plants. “It is highly possible that people of Kashmir would be affected by the water borne diseases since the water being provided to them is dirty without the necessary addition of ferric alum and chlorine. The health of around seven million population of Kashmir is at risk and the concerned authorities are yet to wake up from the slumber,” said sources.
Sources said that around 50 tonnes of chemicals are needed for chlorination and treatment of water in the Kashmir valley on an average in a day. They said the Srinagar district alone needs 20-25 tonnes of chemicals for treatment as well as chlorination of the water supplied to the residents.
An official on the condition of anonymity acknowledged to Early Times that there is shortage of ferric alum with the department adding that there is enough stock of bleaching powder.
The official said that shortage has come up due to the rejection of stock of ferric alum that was procured by the department. The official said that the stock of ferric alum and chlorine would be procured in the next few days or so adding that the stock has exhausted five days back. He claimed that there is no problem with the supply of drinking water and said that situation is managed by the people manning the civil divisions.
