Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 1: Sarpanch of Baroor area in Doda district was attacked allegedly by the goons of high profile people involved in illegal mining as well as running of illegal stone crushers.
According to the details available with Early Times the Sarpanch along with a police party visited the site where illegal stone crushers were operating. They were allegedly attacked in presence of policemen who ostensibly acted as mute spectators.
The Sarpanch who was injured in an attack was later shifted to Government Medical College Doda for treatment.
The injured Sarpanch told the media persons that after seeing the machines functional at the disputed site, they brought the matter into the notice of the concerned Tehsildar who informed them that he has brought the matter into the notice of concerned Station House Officer (SHO). “The police party accompanied us and we were attacked in their presence,” the Sarpanch said.
He said that due this illegal mining and functioning of illegal crushers in the area, about 300-400 houses of the village which are situated above the mining site are sinking and ultimately these houses will someday land in mighty River Chenab.
He said that they have brought the matter into the notice of administration including Deputy Commissioner Doda.
“Nothing has been done till date to stop the illegal mining and functioning of stone crushers,” he added.
The Sarpanch alleged that the mafia running this illegal business enjoys the patronage of administration, police and the officials of Geology and Mining Department. “All those who were involved in an attack on me and others should be booked and arrested, besides illegal mining and stone crushers should be closed without any fail,” he said.
Another local Mohinder Singh said that had gone to the site as policemen were accompanying them. “Police instead of stopping the goons started threatening us. This narrates the whole story about who is shielding the culprits,” he alleged.
Despite repeated attempts District Mineral Officer (DMO) Doda could not be reach out for comment. However, DMO Kishtwar Brijesh Kumar Mishra who few months ago was DMO Doda instead of taking about the measures taken by the department to prevent illegal mining in Kishtwar District said that he has no staff and in absence of cook, he even has to cook food for himself on his own.
