Early Times Report

Rajouri, Oct 7: A scam worth crores has surfaced at Post Office Nowshera in Rajouri district, wherein agents in collusion with the concerned employees have allegedly withdrawn money from the accounts of common people particularly the ones having fixed deposits in the post office. Meanwhile, the Postal Department has taken a serious note of the issue and has suspended its two employees in this connection.
According to the details available with Early Times most of the cases, which have come to fore are of the Fixed Deposits of different customers bearing same account numbers. This has created the chaos. However, in some of the cases the amount was automatically withdrawn from the savings account without the knowledge of the customers. The amount was being withdrawn from the past 6 months by agents and concerned officials and even the involvement of higher-ups cannot be ruled out, the customers alleged. Although the exact amount of fraud has not been disclosed by the department but as per sources, it has been roughly assessed in crores.
The account holders staged a protest in front of the post office demanding action and repayment of their money. “The account holders, who had invested in the Fixed Deposit for years together, were cheated by the agents and employees. Their account numbers were found in the name of other people due to which fraud was committed,” said Rohit Kohli, a social activist and corporator Ward No.10 Nowshera.
Meanwhile, the concerned Director of the Post Office also reached the spot and assured the account holders that the detailed enquiry will be conducted in the case. He also admitted that there is involvement of employees as well as agents and he also suspected the involvement of some other officials also, who have remained posted there.
“The departmental inquiry has been ordered but we will not wait for its completion because it takes a lot of time. The CBI will investigate the matter thoroughly and all claims will be settled,” he said.
He assured all the customers, who were cheated that their claims will be settled soon.
Meanwhile, Rohit Kohli along with other people, submitted a memorandum to ADC Nowshera Sukhdev Singh Sambyal, in this connection demanding action against the culprits. The memorandum has been forwarded to DC Rajouri Nazir Ahmed Sheikh.
