The Jammu and Kashmir administration setting Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti free after 14-months of detention has ended the list of Kashmir centric leaders, who were arrested post August 5, 2019— when the Centre announced its decision to revoke J&K’s special status and bifurcated the erstwhile State into two union territories.
Nearly 40 mainstream leaders were detained after the Centre’s August 5 decision but eventually all were set free. Mehbooba had to serve a prolonged detention due to her separatist leanings. When she was holding the chief minister’s office in Jammu and Kashmir, her decisions had a direct bearing on the Kashmir situation. As the J&K chief minister, she made every attempt to appease the separatists and left no opportunity to talk in Pakistan’s language.
Soon after her release on Tuesday, Mehbooba issued an audio statement and criticized the Centre for its August 5, 2019 decision. Her tone was harsh and no change was visible in her attitude.
The indications which are emerging clearly reveal that Mehbooba won’t mend her ways and will try her best to create the confusion. But she seems unaware about the fact that a lot of water has flown in River Jhelum since August 5, 2019, and people are least interested in the slogans being raised by the Kashmir centric leaders.
The so-called Gupkar Declaration evoked no response from the people. In fact not a single protest was held in Kashmir after the mainstream leaders were detained. People not reacting to their detention proved it beyond doubt that these Kashmir centric politicians were no mass leaders, and they don’t enjoy any support of the common masses.
Prior to August 5, 2019, Mehbooba had issued such statements that could have triggered a furore in the Valley but her attempts didn’t succeed. She may try to make similar efforts again now. The administration has to remain watchful despite the fact that people in Kashmir are not interested in the politics of the leaders like Mehbooba Mufti and others. These politicians have been left with nothing to sell. The people have realized that Kashmir centric leaders during the past seven decades thrived on deceit and falsehood. As on date no one is ready to buy their arguments and slogans, people realize it very well that these leaders can talk about anything, including China, to hoodwink them but this time around there won’t be any takers.
