The Congress Party skipping the all party meeting on Gupkar Declaration called by National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah in Srinagar is a clear hint that the old grand party has accepted the change in J&K’s status-quo and is not interested in toeing the line of Kashmir centric parties.
Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) president, Ghulam Ahmed Mir, on Thursday informed the media that he was unable to attend the meeting due to health reasons. But someone needs to tell Mir had the Congress been interested in attending the meeting the party could have sent some other leader instead of the JKPCC president.
The Congress Party skipping the so-called Gupkar Declaration meet is a clear signal that the party has read the pulse of the people across the country and doesn’t want to go against the tide by challenging Centre’s August 5, 2019 decision to revoke J&K’s special status.
At present the Congress Party is going through the worst ever crisis as the senior leaders of the party who had demanded change in leadership stand dropped from the list of national office bearers of the party. On the other hand people are asking direct questions from the Congress leadership that why it couldn’t do for 70-years what Prime Minister Narendra Modi did within a short span of five years.
When the Kashmir centric parties had signed the Gupkar Declaration, the Congress too had joined the bandwagon. But now, it has dragged its feet to keep itself relevant in the national arena.
During the past few years, Kashmir centric leaders have been dominating the Congress Party in J&K they succeeded in sidelining the Jammu based leaders and it proved detrimental for the party. At present the Congress has no such leader in Jammu, who can claim that he or she enjoys the mass following.
The Congress Party is paying a heavy price for losing focus on Jammu and harping about Kashmir. The party’s leadership to an extent has realized that if it joins the chorus with Kashmir centric parties and becomes an active participant in the Gupkar Declaration it would definitely lose its address in Jammu and as well as other parts of the country.
It appears that the Congress Party has smelled that politics in J&K has changed and to invest its time and energy in the union territory is of no use. So it’s better to let the things fall in place.
