First time in history Accession Day to be celebrated officially today
10/25/2020 11:47:01 PM

Early Times Report

Jammu, Oct 25: History is going to be created on Monday as first time after establishing of democratic set-up in erstwhile state of J&K, the government is going to celebrate Accession Day as October 26 has been declared as ‘public-day’
October 26 will be observed as Accessions Day in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
Earlier Accession Day was celebrated by different social and political organizations, but successive democratic governments, since 1947, have never given importance to this historic day. For the first time in Jammu and Kashmir, people will have a public holiday on October 26, the day last Dogra ruler Maharaja Hari Singh of the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir State signed the instrument of accession with the then Governor-General of India, Lord Mountbatten, acceding his state with Dominion of India in 1947. Although nationalist people of J&K were raising the demand of declaring October 26 as a public holiday since long, their demand was never fulfilled.
Even during the three-year tenure of PDP-BJP regime this demand was repeatedly raised by the people but ‘power hungry’ BJP ministers failed to assert on this issue. It was only in the year 2019 when the government of J&K issued an official calendar of holidays in which October 26 was listed as public holiday.
J&K administration had dropped ‘Martyrs’ Day’ and the birth anniversary of National Conference founder and former Chief Minister Sheikh Abdullah from its list of gazetted public holidays. Earlier, Martyrs’ Day and Abdullah ‘s birth anniversary used to be observed as public holidays on July 13 and December 5 respectively before the state of Jammu and Kashmir was divided into two union territories.
