Dept Social Forestry K conducts workshop on People's Forestry

JAMMU, Nov 5: The Department of Social Forestry, J&K conducted a one day training workshop on "People's Forestry" today at Forest Information Centre, Jammu. The workshop was attended by around 70 field officials of the Department from Jammu, Udhampur and Kathua districts and officials of remaining districts joined through virtual mode. The workshop aimed to update and reorient the field staff on increasing role of the department in greening of J&K with the active involvement of people through Village Panchayat (Plantation) Committees.
The day long workshop was chaired by Dr. Mohit Gera, IFS, Pr. CCF & HoFF/Director, Department of Social Forestry, J&K who spoke in detail on the ways and means of active involvement of people and other stakeholders in all activities of Social Forestry Department. Major activities of the Department such as raising and managing of Village Woodlots, Farm Forestry, Strip Plantations and Institutional Plantations were deliberated in detail & staff was sensitized to enhanced role of people and devolution of powers to VPPCs. The Department so far has constituted 2193 VPPCs and efforts are being intensified for the formation of VPPCs in all Gram Panchayats of UT of Jammu & Kashmir.
The technical issues such as up-gradation of nurseries to raise quality planting stock, clonal technology for higher productivity and benefits to farmers, choice of tree species for better economic returns were also discussed in detail. Several presentations were made by the officers & staff of the Department on topics such as (1) Role of Social Forestry in meeting Forest Products requirement of people and doubling farmer's income (2) Quality Plant Production and Clonal Technology (3) Multipurpose Tree Species for RDFs, VWLs, Institutional Plantations, Farm Forestry & Strips (4). Creation of Village Woodlots with special reference to Bamboo in Jammu Region and Constitution and working with VPPCs.
