Early Times Report

Jammu, Nov 12: Non- operational webpage of the Smart City project for Jammu city has left the netizens high and dry. The website that used to provide progress of the project was launched amidst much fanfare but it showing error has disappointed the people.
The website namely https://jammusmartcity.org designed to highlight the information related to the Smart City project in Jammu has the name titled ‘Project Updates’. The page under Ongoing Projects shockingly is non- operational with Error 404 appearing on it as one clicks the link ‘https://jammusmartcity.org/?page_id=448’ to get an update of the Smart city project.
It is ironic to find that the webpage of such an important project is blank that too at a time when tall claims about turning Jammu into a Smart City are at peak. “This reveals how the project has been virtually left in limbo with no serious emphasis being given on its expedition. The website which should have been providing all the updates related to the project has been taken down. What else you need to understand the non- seriousness one those who claim to be helming the Smart City implementation in Jammu,” says a netizen from Jammu city.
He added that the government hasn’t been revealing much information about the project which was launched years ago with promises made to the people that they will have a model city built by the government.
Pertinently, the then State Government vide Order No.1081-GAD dated August 21, 2017 constituted Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) as Companies Limited by shares named as Jammu Smart City Limited and Srinagar Smart City Limited under the Companies Act, 2013 with authorized share capital of Rs 10 lakh, equity share of Rs 10 each and paid up capital of Rs 10 lakh for both the companies for implementation of Smart City development projects.
On November 7, 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had sanctioned a whooping Rs 80K crore package for Jammu and Kashmir’s various developmental projects. Out of the total sanctioned amount, Rs 500 crore each were sanctioned for smart cities in Jammu as well as in Srinagar. However, four years down the line , as per the official documents, not even one percent of the funds have been utilised on ground.
If sources within the government are to be believed, the Smart City proposal was dumped by the government and not many steps are being taken to get the vital project out from the cold storage.
“The website should have been updated on a regular basis. There is no reason that the webpage that is ought to provide updates on the project has been taken down. The matter will be looked into on priority,” assured an official.
