Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Nov 26: Two army personnel were martyred in a militant attack at Aban Shah Chowk in the Sharifabad area in the outskirts of the Srinagar city today in the afternoon. The attack took place close to the Srinagar-Baramulla highway.
Reports said that some militants appeared in the Aban Shah Chowk and fired upon the army personnel who were part of the Quick Reaction Team (QRT). In the attack two army jawans suffered serious injuries and both of them were shifted to the nearest health centre where they succumbed to their injuries.
They have been identified as Sepoy Ratan of 163 Battalion Territorial Army and Sepoy Deshmukh of 101 Battalion Territorial Army. Following the attack reinforcement was sent to the area and the whole area was cordoned off to nab the militants. The blood stains of the deceased army personnel could be seen at the site of shootout and the same were washed later on.
Senior police and army officers rushed to the spot and took stock of the situation. They were briefed about the militant attack by the personnel present there. Although the area was cordoned off by the police and security forces no arrest was made by the time the report was filed.
Srinagar based defence spokesman of Chinar Corps Colonel Rajesh Kalia said that militants fired indiscriminately at the QRT of the army in general area Aban Shah Chowk, HMT, Khushipora in the Srinagar district in the afternoon. Kalia said that troops exercised restraint and did not resort to firing whatsoever.
"Being a crowded area troops exercised restraint to avoid any civilian casualties & collateral damage. Two soldiers were critically injured & were evacuated to the nearest medical facility. However, they succumbed to their injuries. Area has been cordoned & search operation is in progress," said Colonel Kalia.
A police spokesman said that at about 1:15 PM Srinagar Police received information about a militancy incident at Sharifabad HMT area of Srinagar where militants had fired upon Army ROP. Preliminary investigation revealed that militants travelling in a Maruti car taking undue advantage of crowded place fired indiscriminately at army party resulting in injuries to two army jawans.
"The injured jawans were evacuated to hospital for treatment; however both of them succumbed to their injuries and attained martyrdom. They have been identified as Sepoy Ratan of 163 Battalion Territorial Army and Sepoy Deshmukh of 101 Battalion Territorial Army. The area of occurrence being very much crowded, army personnel exercised maximum restraint to avoid any civilian causalities & collateral damage," said the spokesman.
