KVK Reasi celebrates World Soil Day

JAMMU, Dec 6: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi under the administrative control of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology-Jammu (SKUAST-J) celebrated World Soil Day here at Nomain village in Reasi district of J&K which was enthuastically attended by a number of farmers of the village. All SOPs pertaining to COVID-19 pandemic were strictly followed while conducting the programme. The programme was organised under the guidance and supervision of Director Extension of SKUAST-J, Dr.SK Gupta. The programme was inaugurated by Dr Banarsi Lal, Sr Scientist & Head of KVK, Reasi with the warm welcome of the participants. During the inaugural session he spoke on the significance of soil health and said that every year 5th of December is celebrated as the World Soil Health Day to promote the significance of healthy soil for food security, healthy ecosystem and human well-being. He said that theme of this year World Soil Day is "Keep Soil Alive, Protect the Soil Biodiversity" and added that a good soil health is must to protect the soil biodiversity. He educated the farmers that the Soil Health Card Scheme is a national movement across the country and under this scheme the soil samples are taken by the experts from the farmer's field and tested in a soil testing laboratory.
Dr Lalit Upadhyay, Scientist said that soil health is deteriorating day-by-day by the unhealthy agricultural practices, deforestation and pollution and there is dire need to focus on the soil health while Dr Sanjay Kaushal, Scientist elaborated the technique of soil sampling and demonstrated the technique for the collection of soil sampling.
During the programme various queries were raised by the farmers which were answered in a scientific way by the KVK scientists. The programme was concluded by Dr Sanjay Kaushal with formal vote of thanks.
